St. Louis police have apprehended a man who threatened to shoot and kill as many gay people as possible at the city's upcoming PrideFest, taking place June 29 and 30.
Edward A. Terry was charged Tuesday for making a terrorist threat, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Court documents say Terry created a fake email account and sent a message to one of PrideSTL's parade planners saying he would "come to pride fest with my guns to kill every gay person I can before I kill myself," the Post-Dispatch reports.
The PrideSTL manager notified the FBI of the email, and police tracked the account to Terry's cell phone number, according to court documents.
The arrest comes amid a rise in hate crimes against LGBTQ people, with the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs recording reports of 52 hate violence-related homicides of LGBTQ people in 2017, the highest number ever documented by the national organization aiming to reduce violence against the community.
Terry's bail has been set at $20,000.
