Aware Network, an AIDS organization in Chicago, has been
informed that it is losing 77% of its federal Ryan
White-Minority AIDS Initiative grant, resulting
in a loss of more than $125,000 to the agency, the
Chicago Free Press reports. The grant was
used to provide HIV treatment adherence support to people of
color. Chicago health department officials say the cut was
based on an overall federal funding reduction to the
Chicago area by 53%. However, TPAN officials claim
that other local agencies that share in the minority
AIDS grants saw funding cuts of only about 3%. The local
Ryan White Title I Planning Council, which allocates
the federal grants to local AIDS organizations, says
TPAN still receives the largest amount of funding from
the Minority AIDS Initiative grant. (The
