The Advocate has won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Magazine Overall Coverage. The award was announced Thursday afternoon on Twitter.

"At a time when coverage of LGBTQ issues is declining, LGBTQ media remains critical in amplifying the voices and stories of those within the LGBTQ community," said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. "The Advocate is a glowing example of how media can be used as a driving force to amplify diverse LGBTQ voices, accelerate acceptance for LGBTQ people, and hold those in power accountable. The Advocate's honor as Outstanding Magazine at this year's GLAAD Media Awards is representative of the publication's tireless work to keep LGBTQ issues and people front and center at a time when we need it most. Congratulations to Pride Media CEO Diane Anderson-Minshall, The Advocate editors Tracy Gilchrist and David Artavia, as well as their talented and dedicated team of journalists including Neal Broverman, Trudy Ring, and Daniel Reynolds."

Other members of the team include Jacob Anderson-Minshall, Desiree Guerrero, Donald Padgett, editor at large Tyler Curry, video editor Allison Tate, art director Raine Bascos, and Pride.com's Raffy Ermac and Taylor Henderson, LGBTQ&A host Jeffrey Masters, plus other members of our social media and art departments. Also, throughout 2019, Zach Stafford served as editor in chief of The Advocate and its digital iteration.

The winners of the 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards are being announced on Twitter throughout the day, while a virtual ceremony tonight will highlight a select group of winners. The ceremony, hosted by comedians Fortune Feimster and Gina Yashere, and featuring performances from Chloe x Halle, Shea Diamond, and Ben Platt, will be livestreamed tonight at 8 Eastern on GLAAD's Facebook and YouTube. It will also be broadcast Monday at 8 p.m. Eastern on Logo.

The GLAAD awards recognize fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ+ people and issues.

Trudy Ring

Trudy Ring is The Advocate’s senior politics editor and copy chief. She has been a reporter and editor for daily newspapers and LGBTQ+ weeklies/monthlies, trade magazines, and reference books. She is a political junkie who thinks even the wonkiest details are fascinating, and she always loves to see political candidates who are groundbreaking in some way. She enjoys writing about other topics as well, including religion (she’s interested in what people believe and why), literature, theater, and film. Trudy is a proud “old movie weirdo” and loves the Hollywood films of the 1930s and ’40s above all others. Other interests include classic rock music (Bruce Springsteen rules!) and history. Oh, and she was a Jeopardy! contestant back in 1998 and won two games. Not up there with Amy Schneider, but Trudy still takes pride in this achievement.
