Hairspray and Take Me Out win big with Outer Critics Circle
The gay-themed drama Take Me Out and the drag-inclusive musical Hairspray won the top prizes at the Outer Critics Circle awards, which were announced Sunday. Hairspray took five awards, including best Broadway musical and best director of a musical (Jack O'Brien), while Take Me Out received three, including best Broadway play and best director of a play (Joe Mantello). The gay-themed A Man of No Importance was named best off-Broadway musical, and cross-dressing comedian Eddie Izzard was named best actor for his (non-cross-dressing) lead role in A Day in the Death of Joe Egg. The awards will be presented Thursday, May 29, at Sardi's in New York City.
