Nathan Lane to star in 2005 revival of Butley
Playbill.com reports that a revival of Simon Gray's Butley, with Nathan Lane in the lead role, is likely to premiere on Broadway during the 2005-2006 season. Lane starred in a Boston production in the fall of 2003 and at that time told a Playbill.com columnist that a Broadway production was "just a matter of timing. We're aiming for the fall of 2005." The show deals with a literary professor who loses his wife and male lover in the same day; Alan Bates won a Tony for the original 1972 production before reprising the role on film.
