Gov. Bill Ritter of Colorado signed a nondiscrimination law Friday that offers new legal protections to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals. Prior to the signing, Colorado's nondiscrimination law covered only the categories of race, sex, religion, and disability.

In a press release, Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, a national gay rights group, praised Colorado lawmakers for "taking this important step to advance equality for Coloradoans." He concluded, "Opponents of equality did their best to scare and divide Coloradoans, but it's heartening to see that their tactics were rejected." (The Advocate)
