Los Angeles's
Mormon Temple was evacuated Thursday afternoon after
employees received an envelope filled with an unidentified
white powdery substance, a spokesman for the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints tells NBC 4 News in
Los Angeles.
The temple,
located in the city's Westwood district, was the target of
protests last week following the narrow passage of
Proposition 8, the anti-gay-marriage ballot
measure that Mormons helped bankroll. The FBI is
on the scene in Los Angeles, and a hazardous materials team
has been called.
LDS spokesman
Ronald Smith said a similar envelope was delivered on
Thursday to the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City. (Neal
