Commemorating the role he played to garner his second Oscar win, Sean Penn is lobbying California lawmakers to officially recognize Harvey Milk's date of birth.

Penn will appear with state senator Mark Leno on Tuesday to reintroduce a bill that was earlier proposed to designate Milk's birthday as a day of significance, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The law passed through the Legislature, but Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed the bill in 2008, saying that the Milk should be recognized locally in San Francisco, but not state-wide. The legislation would not close state agencies or schools on May 22.
