The Obama administration argued in court Friday that the federal government should not be obligated to extend benefits to same-sex couples in states where their marriages are considered legal.
According to Associated Press and blog Joe My God, the Justice Department is at odds with the state of Massachusetts -- the first to legalize same-sex marriage -- over the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage on a federal level as being a union between a man and a woman.
Officlas with the Obama administration have said they feel DOMA is discriminatory but say they have an obligation to defend laws enacted by Congress while they are on the books.
