She said she fully intended on being the next mayor of Houston, and now, after a seven-candidate race for mayor, Annise Parker is walking away as a victor -- and one step closer to becoming the first lesbian mayor of a major U.S. city.

With 92% of precincts reporting, Parker walked away with 30.6% of the vote. She will face City Attorney Gene Locke, who scored 25.6% of the vote, in a runoff election in December.

Parker, a former city council member and current city controller, worked for the oil and gas industry before moving into public service. She is a native of Houston, where she lives with her partner, Kathy Hubbard, and two children.

The election saw low voter turnout of 11%, according to the Houston Chronicle.
