The University of North Texas's homecoming king and queen will remain a male and female pair after students on Monday voted down a measure to allow same-sex duos.
As previously reported, earlier in November the UNT's Student Government Association decided to allow its student body to decide whether same-sex couples should be allowed to run for homecoming court by voting online. Voting was conducted last week, and the results were announced today.
No votes outnumbered yes votes by a margin of 58% to 42%, or 2,836 to 2,059. A total of 4,895 students voted.
"It is a disappointment," David Reed of the Tarrant County Lesbian and Gay Alliance told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "I'm not sure that it's completely unexpected, though. I'm surprised at the spread between the yes and no votes.
