The Courage Campaign, a grassroots organization working to overturn California's Proposition 8, announced Monday that it's not endorsing or supporting an effort to repeal the measure in 2010.
Working with Lambda Legal, the Courage Campaign has been conducting research about Californians' attitudes on same-sex marriage. Apparently, the findings show that public opinion has not shifted enough to promise a win for gay marriage next year. Rick Jacobs, the Courage Campaign's founder and chair, said in a release that efforts to restore marriage equality in California -- which was ended in November 2008 by the voter-approved Prop. 8 -- will involve creating broad coalitions of people, finding a strong leader of the effort, and securing enough money for the campaign.
"Right now, the pieces are not all in place to do so confidently," Jacobs said in the release.
Love Honor Cherish now stands as the only major advocacy group in the Golden State pushing for a repeal of Prop. 8 in 2010. The group is now working to gather signatures to qualify the issue for the ballot.
