Chase Gives Matthew Shepard Foundation 37K

Chase Community Giving, the online philanthropic partnership between Chase and Facebook, will give $37,000 to the Matthew Shepard Foundation, the charity announced Monday.

The foundation, which supports diversity programs in education and, with the help of Matthew's mom, Judy (pictured, left), was influential in getting the federal hate-crimes bill passed, was one of 100 organizations to compete for a cash donation from Chase Community Giving. Each of the 100 received at least $25,000 from Chase.

Invisible Children, based in San Diego, took top honors, receiving $1 million. The organization advocates for the rescue of children in central Africa who have been kidnapped from their homes and forced to serve as soldiers in a civil war in Uganda.

Eleven charities each received $100,000 from Chase, while another 11 were selected to receive $37,000 each.

Facebook voters selected the top 100 from a list of more than 500,000 charities. The top 100 included the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network and the Trevor Project.
