Leon County, which includes the Florida state capital of Tallahassee, approved a human rights ordinance Tuesday that includes protections for sexual orientation and gender identity. The law also adds the protections to the county's personnel policy.
The law passed by a 5 to 2 vote at a public hearing, according to Equality Florida. Video from the hearing shows Leon County Commissioner Robert Rackleff, who speaks about his gay son.
"I want Leon County to be known as a welcoming community where everyone can rise to his or her level on merit and not fear discrimination for irrelevant reasons," said Rackleff.
