Team San Francisco published a press release on its website saying the team refuses to participate in the World Outgames in 2013. Officials from Team San Francisco believe the Outgames are a distraction from the Gay Games, another global athletics competition for gay people.

According to the press release, the World Outgames "would constitute a dilution of finite resources and a detriment to our community." Team San Francisco officials will not back any future World Outgames but support the combination of the World Outgames and Gay Games, which will take place in 2018.

Supporters of the World Outgames believe both the Outgames and Gay Games encourage the idea of inclusion in sports and think there is a place for both competitions.

The next Gay Games will take place in July in Cologne, Germany.
