A New York City official and a museum administrator have tied the knot in Connecticut in a show of solidarity with their gay and lesbian friends who can't get married in New York, the Associated Press reports.

Manhattan borough president Scott Stringer and Elyse Buxbaum were married in a civil ceremony last week at City Hall in New Haven. Stringer issued a statement Wednesday saying it was an "incredibly meaningful day" for the couple.

New York's state senate last year voted down a bill that would have allowed same-sex marriage. Connecticut has had marriage equality has since 2008.
