An antidiscrimination ordinance proposed by Omaha city councilman Ben Gray (pictured) faces opposition from fellow city politicians and religious groups seeking an exemption, the Omaha World-Herald reports.
The ordinance would protect LGBT residents from employment discrimination, but it's opposed by fellow council member Jean Stothert: "It will affect every business, every school ... it has far-reaching consequences," she said Monday, according to the newspaper. The Omaha Catholic archdiocese's Deacon Timothy F. McNeil also decried the proposed ordinance, saying, "We don't feel that we should be bound by an ordinance that is against our long-held religious teachings and doctrine."
Nebraska currently has no antidiscrimination protections for gays.
