An antidiscrimination ordinance proposed by Omaha city councilman Ben Gray (pictured) faces opposition from fellow city politicians and religious groups seeking an exemption, the Omaha World-Herald reports.
The ordinance would protect LGBT residents from employment discrimination, but it's opposed by fellow council member Jean Stothert: "It will affect every business, every school ... it has far-reaching consequences," she said Monday, according to the newspaper. "It's a solution looking for a problem."
The Omaha Catholic archdiocese's Deacon Timothy F. McNeil also decried the proposed ordinance, saying, "We don't feel that we should be bound by an ordinance that is against our long-held religious teachings and doctrine."
Nebraska currently has no antidiscrimination protections for gays.
