A phone bank trainer for one of Equality California's Orange County locations opened the office for volunteers Thursday and found a black noose hanging on the door.

Mel Distel told The Orange County Register she found the noose late Thursday when she opened up the Santa Ana office. She called the police, and says an officer told her that sometimes you have to live with being a victim.

Distel says she plans to file a formal complaint about the officer's response. A Santa Ana police spokesperson wouldn't comment on Distel's claims but said police were investigating the incident.
