Henry van Ameringen, a low-key major donor to gay organizations and causes, was named the New Yorker of the Week by local news station NY1.
Reporter Bobby Cuza filed the report on van Ameringen, an heir to a fragrance fortune who estimates that over the past 30 years, he has donated about $120 million to more than 200 HIV/AIDS, mental health, and LGBT charities throughout the city. Agencies receiving help include Gay Men's Health Crisis, In the Life Media, and just last month, the Bronx Community Pride Center. The borough was the site of a brutal gang-related attack on a gay man and two teens in October.
"I knew very early that I was gay, so it was very uncomfortable growing up. I don't really have very happy memories," van Ameringen told NY 1.
