Members of Australia's Labor and Green parties will announce Thursday their joint effort to sponsor a marriage equality bill for the state of South Australia.
Tammy Franks of the Green Party and the Labor Party's Ian Hunter will formally announce their plan to the state parliament. A similar bill was recently introduced in Tasmania, and one is waiting in the wings in Victoria. Hunter said in a statement, that while it will be more difficult to pass nationwide legislation to legalize marriage equality regional bills could be effective.
Franks stressed that her party is the only one in Australia actively working to legalize marriage equality as part of its agenda, but she is "calling for all parties to support the bill outright or at the very least allow a conscience vote on the issue."
