Nine people were arrested on World AIDS Day while protesting New
York City mayor Michael Bloomberg's attendance at a breakfast in
Brooklyn in observance of the global event, NBC News reports.
The activists, members of the organization Housing Works, were performing a "schmear" campaign, and were dressed as bagels. The protest at the Brooklyn Public Library at Grand Army Plaza was to highlight the fact that Bloomberg was attending the breakfast despite not supporting a failed bill that would have capped housing costs for people with HIV or AIDS at 30% of their income.
According to earlier reports, the "bagels" will later join a 24-hour vigil in City Hall park to honor New Yorkers who have succumbed to AIDS.
