David Boies Loses Daughter to Cancer

Fort Lauderdale, Fla., attorney Caryl Louise Boies, whose father, David Boies, is co-lead attorney in the federal Proposition 8 case, died December 26 after battling lung cancer. She was 48.

Caryl Boies was the founding partner of the Fort Lauderdale office of Boies, Schiller & Flexner, her father's law firm.

"The only common thread in what she did was a determination to fight what she perceived as a justice on behalf of people who would not ordinarily have access to counsel of her caliber -- and the larger and more aggressive the defendant, the better,'' David Boies told The Miami Herald. "She really packed an awful lot of living into the time she had."
