Christopher Crowe, a gay congressional staff member, died Wednesday after complications from a staph infection damaged his heart. He was 29.

According to the Washington Blade, Crowe was the president of the LGBT Congressional Staff Association and worked for Texas Democratic representative Eddie Bernice Johnson.

"Christopher was a dedicated legislative assistant who was committed to strengthening the 30th Congressional District of Texas," Johnson said in a statement Wednesday. "He was respected by his colleagues for his professionalism; he was beloved by many for his generous spirit and good humor. He was a person who enjoyed life and always had a smile to share."

Jonathan Gilad of the Gay, Lesbian and Allies Senate Staff Caucus described Crowe as a "dedicated public servant and a truly great friend." Kat Skiles, a spokeswoman for the LGBT Congressional Staff Association, said Crowe's passing was more than a tragedy.

"It's devastating to fathom an individual as kind, strong, and spirited as Chris leaving us due to troubles with, of all things -- his heart," she said.
