Former network programmer Ben Silverman has sold a fashion design show to NBC, which is slated for a 2012 premiere and will be hosted by supermodel-turned-actress-turned-fashion-designer Elle Macpherson.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that the hour-long, elimination-style Fashion Star will be an unscripted prime-time series in which designers vie for a multimillion-dollar contract to create a fashion line to be featured in top retail stores.
Silverman told TheNew York Times that unlike the creations featured on Project Runway, the designs created on Fashion Star -- even those that don't win the competition -- will be available for viewers to purchase online each week, with NBC taking a percentage of the sales.
Silverman has executive producer credits on NBC's The Office and The Biggest Loser. Macpherson is currently hosting Britain's Next Top Model.
