CNN anchor Don Lemon spoke to NPR recently about his newfound role as a gay role model, and what it's like to "walk in and own it."

"It's been interesting just to watch, and I feel free, and all those things, all those wonderful things they say when you finally get something off your chest," Lemon said. The anchor came out in May with the release of his memoir, Transparent.

Lemon gave the interview while presiding over the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association Conference in Philadelphia. Lemon said it was important for him to "walk in and own it" as a sign that everything is OK after coming out nationally, and to thank LGBT journalists for their support. He plans to remain unbiased on gay-related stories but Lemon said he also expects to provide insight and first-hand knowledge that informs his stories.
