Gay Seattle Couple Reacts to Hate-Filled Vandals
A gay couple in west Seattle has displayed a proud, in-your-face response to an alleged hate crime committed against their home.
Early Saturday morning, Lyle Evans and Chris Ilovar woke to a loud noise outside their home in the Genessee Hill neighborhood of Seattle. At first they assumed it was the cat or some sprinklers going off. But when they heard a second noise about 10 minutes later, they realized it was something else.
Opening the blinds, Ilovar saw shadows running down the street. What they found outside was that the tires on both of their cars had been slashed and windows had been shattered by two baseball-size rocks.
Attached to one of the rocks was a profanity-laced note with statements like "Get the f--- out of our neighborhood. The Bible says God forbids men committing indecent act [sic] with other men."
"It feels like a violation," Evans told local television station KING 5. "You don't think things like this happen anymore, especially in Seattle, Wash."
Evans said he and Ilovar have a message for the perpetrators. In addition to making plans to install new padlocks and lights with motion sensors, the couple have put up a flag pole where they intend to hang both the American flag and the rainbow flag.
"Take that, haters," he said.
