Harry Hamlin has been cast as a gay teen's older friend on Showtime's Shameless, nearly 30 years after his famous gay role in the film Making Love.

It's not clear if Hamlin will play an LGBT character, only that he'll be involved with Ian (played by Cameron Monaghan), a working-class gay teenager in Chicago. The second season of Shameless, starring William H. Macy and Emma Rossum, premieres January 8. Read more here.

Hamlin previously starred in the film Making Love as a handsome and confident gay man who gets involved in a love triangle with a married couple; it was one of the first mainstream films to portray a gay man positively. Watch a clip below. Hamlin, married to actress Lisa Rinna, has said he's proud of the role but that it negatively affected his career.
