In 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which asked all nations and states to annually recognize Human Rights Day on December 10.

The day marks an opportunity for all global citizens to commit to the promise that "all human beings are born free and equal." On its website, the United Nations notes that today, this commitment is more important than ever.

"Disrespect for basic human rights continues to be wide-spread in all parts of the globe. Extremist movements subject people to horrific violence. Messages of intolerance and hatred prey on our fears. Humane values are under attack," the website states.

"We must reaffirm our common humanity. Wherever we are, we can make a real difference. In the street, in school, at work, in public transport; in the voting booth, on social media."

In resonse, folks have taken to social media to speak out in their support for women, people of color, LGBT people, and all the world's people. Here are some wise, inspirational, and noteworthy tweets.
