Hate Crime Leaves Gay Man in Coma

A 49-year-old gay man from Queens, N.Y., remained in a medically induced coma on Monday after being attacked by two men as he left a corner deli near his home Friday around 3 a.m.

Jack Price is in serious but stable condition. One suspect has been arrested and the other is still being sought in the incident, which police view as a hate crime, according to the Associated Press.

“Police say the two suspects taunted Price and yelled anti-gay slurs while he was in the store early Friday,” the AP reported. “They attacked him outside, not far from his home in the middle-class Queens neighborhood of College Point.”

Daniel Aleman, 26, was arrested Sunday and charged with assault, aggravated assault as a hate crime, and aggravated harassment.

City Council speaker Christine Quinn, an out lesbian, called for the second suspect to be apprehended quickly during a press conference on Monday.

“I know the Queens community is outraged that hate has tainted their streets, and I know they will join with us in helping the local authorities find the second suspect,” said Quinn in a statement. “I applaud the NYPD for taking swift action on this case, and I know they will continue their efforts until justice is served.”

There is no real equality - and there is no "cure" for hate, or the crime it drives. It's unfortunate that we live in a society where people aren't able to "live and let live". We should remember all of the wonderful things that do come along with our society - and the vast changes that have occurred in the past many years with regards to gay rights. I sincerely hope our government makes examples of these haters - in efforts to deter the others out there - and set an example. An eye for an eye in this case...

As far as I am concerned, a hate crimes assault that leads to death should results in a sentence of death. We need to see a loud and clear message that as a society we will not tolerate this kind of crime and will use the most extreme punishment to exact retribution and to provide an example that would consider such action.

The Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes legislation can not come fast enough! Sadly there are way too many Matthew Shepards or Jack Prices that have had either their lives snuffed out completely or they are lying in hospital beds wondering if they will ever walk again let alone suffering such emotional trauma that they may end up carrying for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, there are people out there who are so mentally sick, if their hate is so severe and their drive to destroy so intense, no law will deter them from their intended victim. Even in Canada, which has had Hate Crimes Legislation on the books for years, along with other Gay rights protections, we are not totally immune to these incidents happening. Just this past weekend in Winnipeg, Manitoba a bathouse was destroyed, two men were killed, one a well known drag queen in the area. The police are treating it as suspicious.

John, your comment is so stupid it doesn't even deserve to be discussed. But for the sake of argument... what have you done to promote hate crime laws? You might as well be the one who beat this guy. Everyone has power, some people just chose to complain online.

and to think there are still "idjits" out there who firmly believe that "we" do not need enhanced hate crime laws on any books.

Sorry, Owen, I don't really think these kinds of attacks are going to stop once we achieve equality.

Just be patient people and you'll become a patient. I think all you Obama apologists need to take a hard look at what being patient gets the gay community, it turns you into a patient.
