Gay Anarchist Group Defaces Billboard

BEFORE AND AFTER BILLBOARD X390 (COURTESY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Bash Back! — a self-proclaimed activist group of “Radical Transfolk, Queers and Allies” that was profiled in the August issue of Details magazine — has copped to defacing a billboard sponsored by the Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Center that depicted a soldier proclaiming “I’m gay and I protected your freedom.”

Memphis community leaders quickly denounced the vandalism, which occurred in September, as a vicious act motivated by homophobia. In a Monday post on its website, however, Bash Back! lashed out at the center’s decision to spend a reported $3,500 on the billboard advertising, “when Memphis has the highest trans-murder rate (11 trans women of color, 1 white transwoman and 1 transman of color), as well as one of the highest queer youth homeless rates in the nation.”

“Sending gays to be military fodder is NOT pro-gay or conclusive whatsoever to gay liberation,” the post reads. “State militarism only reinforces the dominant structures, and the racism/heterosexism they perpetuate, as well as reducing the number of gay people in the world.”

Established gay organizations have been common targets of the group. Bash Back! has protested Human Rights Campaign dinner fund-raisers, including an HRC event in Minneapolis in September, where protesters held signs reading “What Would Sylvia Rivera Do?” referring to the New York transgender activist and Gay Liberation Front founding member who died in 2002.

Last month, on the eve of the National Equality March, a group affiliated with Bash Back! vandalized HRC headquarters in Washington, D.C., throwing pink and black paint and scrawling graffiti that read “Quit Leaving Queers Behind.”

Most T people are nothing like these self-described radicals. Bash Back is just a very small group of 20-somethings that are angry and unfocused. They'll grow out of it. Don't blame the T community for this nonsense.

*Please note that Bash Back! did not claim any responsibility for what happened to the billboard. There was an article on their News Blog that brought up good thoughts, questioned the automatic assumption that the billboard was ripped down by homophobic people, and offered an alternative idea--that people against putting military recruitment propaganda in poor, mostly people of color (POC) neighborhoods is purposefully deceitful, and ties into the history of exploiting people of color and poor people in the US. (We call this racism and classism). The Bash Back! News Blog simply presented the idea that anti-military activists could have defaced the billboard too, and then continued with a commentary on negative aspects of the military. I support bashing back and fighting for our liberation, and the liberation of all marginalized peoples. I also support reading articles closely, and not misrepresenting what people stand for, and not faulting them for actions that they do not claim

Tom - thank you for semi-showing exactly why some trans folks think they must resort to ridiculous tactics to be heard. So quick to include us when it suits you, but ever so fast to throw us under the bus when it comes to your 'equal' rights. You also show you are fairly ignorant as to what transgender even means or encompases. Sigh. International Transgender Day of Remembrance is Friday, November 20th. http://www.transgenderdor.org 100 Voices silenced in 2009, more than double of last year's statistics.

Alex is absolutely right!!! It's time for a radical rethinking of where mainstream gays are leading the gay movement. Bash Back represents the best and the brightest of our people. It's in the spirit of Stonewall and Act-Up. Naturally log cabin gays and other groups of fascists want to shut them out.

A fresh reminder that both political wings have their fringe elements. Rest assured this will be picked up by Glenn Beck, Hannity and Rush and used to bash legitimate GLBT proponents, just as Rachel Maddow attempts to color the entire Republican party by their fringe element. We should stand up and denounce this group for what it is - a group of vandals and common criminals - nothing more.

Alex ask "While their methodology may be questionable, their message is spot on. Why ARE we focusing so much on DADT when so many trans people are dying every day? " Maybe it is because there is more going on than just them. Maybe it is because many gays feel no connection to the transgendered movement. I personally support trans rights, and will help any way I can, but have to say that after this groups actions I am starting to question why there is a T in LGBT. Why should I support them when they don't support us? Why do I care about them, after all trans peoples ultimate goal is to become the opposite sex, and many do every year, gaining the rights that we as gay people crave. If the trans to female they can legally marry the man the love, for instance. We have supported them for years, and quite frankly having the T attached to us may have actually hurt gay rights, but I still support them. The Trans community needs to stand up andspeak out against Bash Back

Alex from Albany- 2 things: First, I get that talking about how the "military industrial complex" promotes racism and homophobia is a popular way to frame issues concerning the military and it's relationship to the LGBT community and communities of color. But just because you use some big words and have a couple of lefty has-beens publishing about it, doesn't mean it's actually true. I strongly prefer empirical to ideological analysis and unless you folks can do more than 'critically theorize', you're really not gonna get a lot of traction. Second, on this group's methods. There are a bunch of ways to communicate that you don't like an idea. Tearing down a bilboard or covering it up is a pretty childish way to go about it. Maybe the reason people haven't come around to their point of view is that it's been considered and rejected. Shouting loader doesn't make the words more convincing, it makes then more pathetic.
