Maddow Takes on Ex-Gay Movement

RACHEL MADDOW EXGAY SCREEN GRAB MAIN X390 | Advocate.com

In her continuing series “Uganda Be Kidding Me,” MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow on Tuesday night interviewed Richard Cohen of the ex-gay group the International Healing Center.

Maddow invited Cohen on her program because, as she reported, the IHF sent a staffer to Uganda to speak to parliament about its ex-gay work and to speak at a conference organized by the man behind a proposed bill that calls for the execution of gay people in Uganda. Since the IHF visit, Ugandan politicians have been using the group’s work, and Cohen’s book Coming Out Straight, to support their “Kill the Gays” bill.

As you might imagine, Maddow tore Cohen to pieces with her intelligent, scientifically based, and impassioned arguments.

What I find funny about the APA's stance that gays can't change is that whenever someone says that they've changed the APA simply replies by saying "No, you have not changed. It isn't possible." Their evidence that change is not possible is based on the belief that self-reports in this area aren't valid. yet when you ask them for evidence of that, they don't have it. They say that there isn't sufficient research to prove that sexual orientation can change (even though there is). But then they make the assertion that sexual orientation cannot be changed without presenting any research other than a few sob stories of ex-gay men who cheated on their spouses. But that would be like me saying monogamy is impossible for men because hetero Joe Schmoe over here cheated on his wife.

If the wanting of love from a mother or father makes you LGBT, all teenagers are gay, as well as orphans.

What can I say, except I think we could gather a multitude of empirical evidence to debunk this moron! I am gay, grew up with two parents who love me, 4 brothers who love me, 4 sisters who love me, no one close to me died when I was young, got divorced, my parents are religious, but accept that their children don't care for religion... Do I go on? I guess it's time we pose the question, what did gay people do to this man to make him spread the word of hate (however subtle he thinks he is)? Well here is a big thank you to Rachael, she is an inspirational journalist who not only took on a self serving idiot who just plugged his book for the entire interview (did he understand what was going on) but did it in a cool, calm, collected and somewhat sexy fashion. Well I'm signing out, to go be gay... I hope my daddy issues don't get in the way.

And I want to add another thing: I came from a happy, well-adjusted family, and my parents raised me well and are wonderful people. I've always been close to both of them and that hasn't changed. I consider the idea that somehow I'm gay because of a terrible childhood as an insult against not only me but my parents. F*** you Cohen.

Wow. Rachel Maddow did the kind of interview every respectable journalist should be doing on this topic. Thank you so much for forcing him to justify his words and writings, which of course, he couldn't. Great work Ms. Maddow!

Rachel, Thank you for your thoughtful and disturbing expose about the role that K street, Evangelical Americans, ex gays and other assorted buffoons are playing in developing a policy to kill and murder gays. You are a catalyst for meaningful change and that change is evidenced by "Pastor" Warren's obvious about face and finally speaking out. It is disgraceful that we have people who sit as elected officials representing constituents in their home districts and states and have the audacity to travel abroad to promote their twisted agendas. All of the aforementioned bozos on Maddows show......happen to be.....surprise , s surprise......Republicans....do you all think there is a connectiion. Help people who are homeless...god forbid but take taxpayer money to peddle misinformation and outrageous lies....no problem.....All of those elected officials need to be exposed and voted out of office........that will probably happen when the cow jumps over the moon....one never knows....
