Dolan "Grateful" Gay Marriage Bill Failed

Timothy Dolanx390 (Screen grab) | Advocate.com

Archbishop of New York Timothy Dolan sat for a rare interview Thursday with NY 1 News in which he said that he was “grateful” the marriage equality bill failed in the New York state senate last year. He also said that gays and lesbians should not be allowed to march in the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade.

“The archbishop would not shy away from controversial issues,” said reporter Roma Torre. “On the subject of gay marriage, Dolan said he was grateful that the state senate last year defeated a same-sex marriage bill. He also said he has no plan to support the gay and lesbian community in its fight to carry banners in next month’s St. Patrick's Day parade.”

Dolan was named to lead the archdiocese last year and for the most part kept a low profile in the first year of his appointment.

Watch the full interview here. The conversation on gay rights issues begins around the 7:45 mark.

Recognizing this is a few days late, I must first say I agree with ALL posters, but a little contex may be enlightening. Timothy came to Milwaukee from a relatively small parish to head the local Archdiocese after his predecessor was busted for being gay and contributing to the national abuse scandal. His success in defusing the situation, making the locals "feel good" again with his hallmark of accessibility for community feasts (which in Milwaukee, you KNOW include libation!), spewing the doctrine, and being the "hometown boy" I've no doubt contributed to his "promotion" to New York. Sadly, what was contrived to work locally seems to have followed him to the larger stage he now occupies. Hey, welcome to the BIG time!

My man Ron! Your post cracked me up! As a heterosexual, Christian mother Father Dolan's frightens me. I don't want my children seeing men like him in power with such incredibly bigoted ideas. I guess he missed the part where The Savior said, "Judge yet not be judged" and "those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones." I weap for men like him who have bastardized the teachings of Christ.

The strange thing is that refusing gays and lesbians the right to march is a violation of Irish law. So they celebrate being Irish by violating Irish law....strange eh ! Time to tax the Catholic and all other churches, they are no longer purely religious organizations.

What does the MInister of Hate Fred Phelps and a whole lot of bitter queens in the "gay community" have in common? Ugly Catholic-bashing. And to what purpose? You can't defeat ignorant homophobia with ignorant anti-Catholicism. Blind hatred is never productive. If you self-righteously pontificate about racism, anti-semitism and homophobia "in society" and then go out and unashamedly wallow in anti-Catholic bigotry like a pig in the mud, it only makes you look like hypocritical haters.

Look what celibacy has done for him. He seems to be suffering from flexible elbow syndrome. Or does he just eat a lot as a substitute for sex.

From the Freedom From Religion Foundation March newsletter: In 2007 the Boston Archdiocese sold its headquarters for $65 million to cover abuse related costs. In 2008 the Archdiocess of Los Angeles sold its headquarters to help pay $660 million in sex abuse settlements. Now the Catholic Diocese of Burlington, VT is selling its headquarters building and Camp Holy Cross to raise money for settlements to alleged sex abuse victims. This pompous asshole should be apologising to all of us and begging for his god's forgiveness!
