Officer Who Shot, Killed CEO Named

DEFARRA GAYMON X390

The officer who allegedly shot and killed an Atlanta bank CEO at a popular gay cruising spot in Newark, N.J. has been identified as 29-year-old medal of merit recipient Edward Esposito.

Authorities for the Essex County sheriff’s department had refused to name Esposito, claiming a risk to his undercover work. But both MontclairPatch.com and The Star-Ledger revealed his identity, citing multiple sources from within the department.

Earlier this month, Credit Union of Atlanta CEO DeFarra Gaymon was shot and killed by a police officer in Newark after allegedly propositioning the officer at a gay cruising area.

Gaymon allegedly stopped by the Branch Brook Park area while en route to his 30th high school reunion. The neighborhood is known for attracting sexual activity and male prostitutes, according to a report in The New York Times.

According to Essex County prosecutor Robert D. Laurino, the officer, whose name he refused to release at the time, claims he fired in self-defense. He says when he attempted to arrest Gaymon for lewd behavior, he ran and, when cornered, tried to disarm the officer. The officer shot Gaymon once. He died three hours later at nearby University Hospital.

The chairs of Garden State Equality and the Gender Rights Advocacy Association of New Jersey sent a letter to Laurino and Essex County sheriff Armando B. Fontoura demanding an investigation into the killing. The letter asks if the incident was part of a sting operation in Branch Brook Park and requests a meeting to further discuss the killing.

"In no way do we condone any violation of lewdness statutes," the letter reads. "But any sting operation targeting gay men or LGBT people specifically, or anyone perceived as such, is unconscionable — and as we strongly believe, illegal."

Gaymon was married and the father of four children.

This cop's picture should be circulated because he probably lets guys go down on him all the time. This lame cover story about "working undercover" ALL ALONE is probably just a lie to hide what really happened! If you're a straight cop would you be "working" the bushes without ANY back up? Isn't one of their biggest fears being raped by another man (or 20)? And the cop is supposed to have arrested another man just before the shooting. Did the victim see this cop being serviced before the arrest? Did he threaten to report this cop?

This guy sure doesn't look like he would try to disarm a cop.He was on his way to his High School reunion, so I'm thinking it was daylight. He's not a criminal so why is he dead?

What a mess this country has become. What's next, shot and killed for J-walking? How did we get to the point where you can die asking someone for sex? Or that violent crime from the hundreds of millions of guns has become so rampant and dangerous in this country that cops now shoot first and ask questions later.... regardless of the situation. This was not some sting operation on a crack den, some human smuggling operation or terrorist cell, it was a park where a bunch of gay men cruise other consenting adults for sex. Sorry, statistically as a community, exactly how dangerous are we? Besides some hair pulling between drag queens, I've never seen a fight in a gay club, event, pride parade, unlike straight clubs where violence is a nightly occurrence. If this was a "sting" operation were they totally uniformed as to the people that frequent such an area? If so, why? Crime is not crime is not crime. That's why they are taught self defense, cary clubs, tasers and guns. Cops, not cowboys.

"Victims are victims" you should read a little more carefully. "NotAddUp" wasn't blaming this victim at all. Quite the opposite. What he did say was that as a husband and father, regardless of sexuality or circumstances, it was "regrettable" that he engaged in such a risky activity. And if you don't know that cruising parks is dangerous then you should follow hate crimes statistics more closely. I can recall at least three gay men who were murdered, just in the Dallas area, over the last 20 years. And those were just the ones that made national headlines. There are others. So, if you want to take that risk on your own, fine. But when you have children...

NotAddUp in Boca Raton, FL - it's legal for same-sex couples to marry in several states in the U.S. and in several countries, including Canada. Your assumption that because the article said Gayman was married with 4 children may be flat out wrong. He may have been an openly gay man. It's not for us to judge whether his decision to go to a sleazy public park to cruise was wise or not. The relevant question pertains to the officer's use of a weapon. Why hasn't an investigation begun? The circumstances are obviously odd and the resulting killing completely out of character for the type of crime that was alleged. An investigation should have begun immediately. What's the hold up? The police have to come up with a good excuse first??

Mike: "Lighten up?" Are you serious? You grow up. Did you notice that this article is about a married man, father of three, who was murdered by a cop at a well known gay cruising spot? How many levels of tragedy did you have to ignore to write something so callous? Whatever his "closet problems" or appearance was, he was loved by, at the very least, his wife and children, and deserves not to be victimized in death the way he was in life. If you can't exercise a shred of good taste, try to at least show some restraint.

Mike, are all people from Richardson, Texas assholes or just you? That is the most distasteful, offensive, ridiculous thing I've ever read. The man was just shot and killed. What a stupid, careless, thoughtless thing to criticize a man's appearance, especially under circumstances like these. There's really only one word that adequately describes you: dumb-ass! STFU and have some respect.

With all due respect...I'm surprised the cop didn't run from HIM! I'm sorry, but that poor boy got hit with the ugly stick! I don't think I've quite ever seen lips like that on a man before. I think he might be a Pat. Yeah, shame on me, but you know your thinking it too. Lighten up.

I was the victim of a crime, last year I was robbed at gunpoint, at a drive up ATM, at 9:18 at night. I do partially blame myself because I shouldn't have been there, in that neighborhood, that late, and I'm very glad that I wasn't killed. It's horrible that this man was shot and killed, but he should not have been there. That being said, I do think there is something VERY suspect about why this cop would have drawn his weapon on an unarmed man who was running from him. I would like to know all of the facts of this story, not just what is being reported. Crusing is a rather victimless crime and I think that if someone runs, cops should not be allowed to chase them. Maybe they should check Mr. Gaymon's stomach for the cops sperm, wouldn't be surprised to find out the cop let him blow him, then decided to try to arrest him and it went bad. Some of the best sex I've had was with "str8" cops.
