Mehlman Draws Fire, Praise

KEN MEHLMAN 4 X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

While some gay advocates joked that one of the worst-kept secrets in Washington was out, others welcomed the news with open arms — on both sides of the aisle.

Ken Mehlman, campaign manager for President George W. Bush in 2004 and former chair of the Republican National Committee, came out as gay in an interview with The Atlantic posted Wednesday afternoon.

Though many bloggers seethed with anger at the fact that Mehlman presided over a campaign that strategically pushed anti-gay marriage amendments in 11 states in 2004 (Joe.My.God’s Joe Jervis called Mehlman a “Quisling Homophobic Scumbag” among other choice epithets), one of the movement’s most prominent marriage equality advocates sang his praises.

“I have spent no time thinking about where Ken was four to five to six years ago. I’m just thankful that he’s with us today,” said Chad Griffin, cofounder of the American Foundation for Equal Rights, the organization that’s solely funding the legal challenge to California’s Proposition 8 in federal court brought by former Bush solicitor general Ted Olson and progressive legal eagle David Boies.

“He is one of the most brilliant political strategists from the Republican side of the aisle,” said Griffin, “and he is also a master fund-raiser and brings contacts and relationships to bear that are comparable to almost no one.”

Indeed, Mehlman’s first act as an out gay man will be hosting a fund-raiser of the foundation next month to help support the case, which likely carries a price tag in the millions of dollars (the group has declined to disclose exactly how much).

Although the invitations have yet to be mailed, Mehlman told The Advocate Wednesday evening that just through pre-selling the event, organizers had already helped to raise about $750,000.

The lineup of heavy conservative hitters hosting the event includes people such as Christine Todd Whitman, the former New Jersey governor and administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency; Lew Eisenberg, former Republican National Committee finance chairman and national finance chairman for Sen. John McCain; and Mark and Nicole Wallace, former United Nations ambassador and White House communications director under Bush, respectively.

“A lot of different people have come together to make this a success, but the one who has been the most generous and who is hosting it is Paul Singer,” said Mehlman, referring to the wealthy GOP donor and hedge fund executive. But Mehlman added that he and his colleagues were merely building on the efforts of "a lot of people who have worked hard on these issues for a number of years."

I have no respect for this guy. He reminds me of Roy Cohn, the closeted lawyer who helped Joseph McCarthy destroy the lives of many homosexuals working for the government in the 1950's. Mehlman was part of a homophobic administration that actively sought to deny rights to gays.

For the so-called LGBT establishment to embrace a man like Mehlman is unfortunate. Here's a guy who NOW finds it convenient to come out, as he himself admits. On a personal level, of course it is a wonderful thing that Mehlman has left the worst place for any gay person: the closet. I wish him well on his new path. However, he should not be celebrated or given any place of distinction in the gay community. He can atone for his past homophobia by quietly serving the LGBT community which he once did so much to vilify and marginalize. Yes, community service sounds about right. And that's a light sentence for a guy like Mehlman.

This has nothing to do with coming out. Thanks to Mehlman, "Adolph" Bush was able to appoint the two most anti-gay activist judges onto the Supreme Court who will take away our civil consittutional right of civil marriage, start two unnecessary wars, destroy the economy and enviroment, illegally wiretap, torture, and work for a constitutional amendment against same sex civil marriage equality. Like the kapos (Jews who led other Jews to the gas chambers for Hitler), Mehlman will be taken down by his ex-cohorts in the Republican party now that they have no further use for him.

The prodigal son returns after squandering his heritage - and the constant son is pissed! How can we forgive and yet not forget? Forgiveness does not absolve one from responsibility or restitution. Is the apology sincere and sufficient? He brings allies with gifts. Does this help erode the fundmentalist grip on the RNC and advance our goals of equality? I really hope so. How do I apply NOH8 to myself? I am ambivalent.

In 1170, Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket was killed after 4 knights took King Henry II's words, 'will someone rid me of this meddlesome priest...' to heed....while Henry didn't kill Becket, he was generally held responsible- it was on his words that the deed happened. Henry was forces by the pope to crawl on his hands and knees through the streets of Canterbury to Becket's tomb, where he begged forgiveness while monks flogged him him. Well- Mr. Mehlman....I hold you responsible for the words and actions against gays you help promote. Before I even CONSIDER forgiving you, you need to crawl on your hands and knees down Castro street in SF to a statue of Harvey Milk to beg forgiveness, while family members who lost a loved one to an anti gay hate crime get to flog you! Plus, you should print out every negative comment and read them each day for a year!

Mehlman is the BP of the gay rights world. He helped to create the mess, now we're supposed to be happy that he is here to help clean it up.

He was strongly involved in the political party that drove through anti-gay constitutional amendments in state after state, as well as used gay rights as a scare tactic to stimulate conservative voters worried about "traditional family values". Now we're expected to just forget all of that?

I can't describe how much harm he has done. Nothing he can do can make up for his past.
