Colo Gov. OKs Lesbian Latina Supreme Court Justice

Monica Marquez will be the first out lesbian and the first Latina to sit on the Colorado supreme court, Gov. Bill Ritter announced Wednesday.

"It is not because Monica is a Latina or because she is gay," Ritter said, according to The Denver Post. "I chose her because of her analytical ability and her keen intellect."

Marquez, 41, is currently the deputy Colorado attorney general. She is not the first legal pioneer in her family. Her father was the first Latino judge appointed to the Colorado court of appeals.

While some conservatives, like Matt Arnold of the group Clear the Bench Colorado, believe Marquez is an activist judge, Colorado attorney general John Suthers, a Republican, wrote a letter of recommendation on her behalf.

Marquez will take her seat on the court December 1, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of chief justice Mary Mullarkey. The new chief justice will be picked from among the members of the court.
