Bullying Drives Teen to Suicide

The parents of Asher Brown, an eighth-grader who committed suicide last Thursday, say that their son killed himself in response to relentless antigay bullying at his Houston school.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the mother and stepfather of Brown said that constant harassment at Hamilton Middle School in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District prompted their 13-year-old son to shoot himself in the head.

“Brown, his family said, was ‘bullied to death’ — picked on for his small size, his religion and because he did not wear designer clothes and shoes,” reported the Chronicle. “Kids also accused him of being gay, some of them performing mock gay acts on him in his physical education class, his mother and stepfather said.”

Grieving parents David and Amy Truong said that the school never responded to several complaints they made in the past 18 months. The school district said they never received any complaints from the parents, teachers or other students.

The Chronicle reported that the morning Brown died, he told his stepfather that he was gay. David Truong said he was OK with the revelation.

its a shame that people cant live their lives without getting pick on and bullyed. i know the feeling i got picked on from the 4th grade to the 6th grade. now in 7th grade im have made some good friends to help me out. these kids that had killed themselfs probably didnt have that many friends and those friends are probably scared to stick up for them. they should have the right to live their lives like the rest of us. but instead they are getting soo tired of getting picked on so they go right ahead and kill themselfs.. we need to find a very good plan to STOP bullying NOW.

Its a shame how the immature students who treated Brown in such a way are not the only ones. Students all over the country are being treated the same as Asher was and there needs to be more done to help prevent this sort of action from happening. When I first read about Asher's incident, I was shocked to see that the teachers even denied any claims by the parents for help with their sons bullying. After all the Brown family has apparently been through and told the school you would think the district would have taken more action. From what I have read it seems as if the students that were causing the harassment are the ones who truly need help. Just because a child is not wearing the same outfit or doing the same activities as the other students gives the bullies no right to torture another student. The school should have been paying more attention to the students social life outside of the classroom, such as at recess or other social activities. Maybe monitoring their activities.

After reading the story of the recent deaths of several teenagers in recent weeks it takes me back to my own days of when i was bullied beyond belief. The word bully was not even mentioned and help was null and void . I fought mental and physical abuse each and every day of my life for 3.5 years. I attempted several times to harm myself and spent months of my life in hospitals. Today, i am no good for anything or anyone. I have 1 good friend i see once a month . i was left scarred and on medications for severe depression. Seeing these boys and hearing the stories, broke what heart i have left. I ONLY wish i could of rounded them all up and hugged them and let them know they are important and cared about. I wish i would of had that same opportunity. Instead, i am a shell of what use to be. My life is over, but i mourn for those that have limited voice and who's fear is far greater than any force imaginable.

Asher's picture has been with me here in a fast and vigil for three days, in Palm Springs. I feel as if I've gotten to know him. I am so sorry for this loss and for all the teens who feel this way. He has been a saint beyond my understanding and his image has changed the minds and hearts of the world. Thank you to his parents for bringing him in to this world even though his time was cut so short. I'm so sorry my little gay brother is gone. I will do everything in my power to end bullying where ever I may go be it the Senate floor, church or on the streets in town. God Bless you and God bless the LGBT students of America.

In addition to LGBTQ youth, the neurodiverse (children with autism, ADHD or learning disabilities) are routinely bullied in k-12 classrooms. The mother of a child with autism, who was bullied so severely he withdrew from school, has started a new effort. http://endthebullying.wordpress.com/ End the Bullying uses its blog, a Facebook page, and Twitter to build a grassroots base of a grassroots base of people who are willing to provide support and insight for children who experience bullying and for their parents. Our hope is to provide resources via the Internet and, when needed, locally, for children and families who are experiencing bullying, especially when the authorities are not handling the situation as they should. In news stories about bullying, especially when it has led to suicide, parents note that they repeatedly tried to contact school administrators or other authorities, only to be ignored. Many families whose stories do not make the news also attest to this cycle of nonresponsiveness. End the Bullying focuses on identifying people across the United States who can serve as contacts and facilitators for parents and children whose complaints are not being heard.

If they were a for-profit organization, I would be horrified. What would you have them so instead Michael? Sit on their hands? They're trying to help for goodness sake!

Not to worry, HRC is on the case. They immediately crafted an e-mail solicitation for donations using these tragedies to their advantage. Really? Yes. Disgusting. We call that "opportunism" where I come from.
