150 Reasons to Have Pride in 2010

Thanks to his rousing statements for marriage equality, silver fox Keith Olbermann is reason number 38 to have pride in 2010. Read the other 149 reasons here.

150 REASONS TO HAVE PRIDE IN 2010 X390 | ADVOCATE.COM

Also, check out our interview with another reason to be proud: Cynthia Nixon.

BECAUSE FAIR IS FAIR
When Montana’s supreme court ruled in favor of a lesbian who sued her former partner for joint custody of the children they’d raised together, Justice James Nelson called antigay discrimination “evil.” He went on to say that “lesbian and gay Montanans must not be forced to fight to marry, to raise their children, and to live with the same dignity that is accorded heterosexuals.”

In the face of proposed legislation that would have prohibited Maryland from recognizing same-sex marriages performed legally in other jurisdictions, state attorney general Douglas F. Gansler said no. In an opinion (one that antigay pols tried unsuccessfully to impeach him over) Gansler said that if such rights are legal elsewhere, they’re good for Maryland too.
Even though Nevada governor Jim Gibbons vetoed a bill to legalize domestic partnerships, both the senate and assembly overrode the veto with clear majorities.

WEST SIDE STORY X390 (JOAN MARCUS) | ADVOCATE.COM

BECAUSE WE MADE BROADWAY WHAT IT IS TODAY
Stephen Sondheim, the most Tony-winning composer, turned 80 in the spring and is being feted throughout the year for his body of work. I’ll drink to that! (We’ll be toasting with a vodka stinger.)

Yes, Arthur Laurents, the 91-year-old playwright and director, revived his West Side Story (featuring lyrics by Sondheim) in 2009 and has published a memoir, titled Original Story By, but we’re mostly excited by his advice for younger gay men: “First of all I want to say I’m active sexually, so there’s hope for anyone!”

Well, I just found out about this Chris Armstrong dude through some flyer that was left on my door. He totally makes me sick, especially since he also lied to the U of M Board of Regents. Armstrong does not seem like he has the type of character that a leader should have. I think he should resign. Everyone should check out this blog, “Chris-Armstrong-Watch.blogspot.com”. It is eye-opening.

I just wanted to add on that I am a straight student at the University of Michigan and a HUGE supporter of Chris Armstrong and everything he is doing for the campus as a whole and for the LGBT community. He's a great president and I look forward to all of the positive change he will undoubtedly create during his term.

@ Anti-Armstrong, Are you retarded? You call him a radical gay activist for being pro gay marriage and gay adoption? You're not going to find any supporters here. I guess 44% of the country are radical gay activists too.

Does anyone ever take a moment to think about those LGBT people who don't have jobs, lost their homes, face job discrimination, and other forms of oppression that make peoples lives miserable. Pride is great but not everyone has a reason to celebrate.

@ Anti-Armstrong Just had a look at your site and wow, you seem more in the wrong esp as you can't stop being homophobic and going ON and ON about Chris. Who cares? You're a funny and mean spirited person. If only you gave a sh*t about world poverty or equality for all mankind? Nope. Obsessed with Chris, I forgot!

    Comment:

The fact that Chris Armstrong is the first openly homosexual student president of the University of Michigan is nothing to celebrate. This kid is a racist LIAR, who comes from an extremely privileged background and has never worked a day in his life. Armstrong LIED to minority students' faces when he said he would never join Order of Angell, a secret student society with a well-documented history of racism and elitism. Find out about the REAL Chris Armstrong at "Chris-Armstrong-Watch.blogspot.com"

Another reason to have Pride is that equality is guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution!!! I am legally married the man I have been with for over 18 years. RAH! RAH!

University of Michigan makes history?? What? We elected Jack Baker* as a gay student body president at the University of Minnesota 40 years ago, in 1971! And re-elected him the next year. That was even reported in your magazine: Advocate; 3/15/72, Issue 81, p13 (back when you used to report news, not fluff). Don't you people even read your own magazine? * Yes, that's the same Baker in Baker vs. Nelson, the 1971 gay marriage case that went all the way to the US Supreme Court.
