Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer is officially joining the fight to allow same-sex marriage. According to Sebastian Kitche at The Courier-Journal, Fischer joined almost 500 other members of Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, a project of the national group Freedom to Marry, becoming the first mayor of a large city in Kentucky to sign on to the equality project. He joins mayors from 39 different states are part of the project.

"It is clear to me that discrimination of any form should not be tolerated and that committed gay and lesbian couples deserve the protections that only marriage can provide," Fischer said in a statement. "Louisvillians, Kentuckians, and the rest of America have been on a journey towards support of marriage for same-sex couples."

Freedom to Marry founder Evan Wolfson told Kitchen that Fischer's statement shows "that people in Kentucky are evolving and opening their hearts and changing their minds, just as a majority of Americans have. When I started this work, most Americans did not support the freedom to marry."

Today 19 states allow same-sex marriage and a majority of Americans in many regions support marriage equality.
