It is rumored in hushed tones behind Coromandel screens in plush parlors that John Waters is an example of the highest level of reincarnation. What else would explain his seemingly eternal life in the creative world and the public eye? And have you ever seen him sweat? John Waters makes it all look so easy, no big deal, what the heck. Plus, he has created some of the filthiest films ever made.
In this current exhibit at Marianne Boesky Gallery, running through February 14, Waters both criticizes American cultural trash and reinvents it for his own loony purposes.
Of a series of self-portraits that includes a Photoshopped version of himself with extreme plastic surgery, Waters writes, "Since I haven't made a film in 10 years, must I give my entire life's work a facelift? Now that celebrity is the only obscenity left in the art world, where do I fit in?"Of great interest is a new 74-minute video titled Kiddie Flamingos (see stills below). Imagine a table read of a G-rated version of Waters's infamous Pink Flamingos with kids.
It looks like it is so much fun to be John Waters.
