The Almodovar production house, El Deseo, announced Thursday that director Pedro Almodovar's next film will be Volver, starring Penelope Cruz and Carmen Maura. The film is set to shoot in Madrid and La Mancha in July. In addition to Cruz, Volver sees Almodovar team up once again with Maura, who starred in his early 1980s films and last worked with him on 1988's Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Almodovar--whose last feature was Bad Education, starring Gael Garcia Bernal--has called Volver a generational comedy about three women who travel from Spain's south to Madrid seeking a better life. "In this social setting three generations of women go through fire and water, survive everything thrown at them, including death, thanks to their goodness," Almodovar said in a statement. "Volver is a cross between Michael Curtiz's Mildred Pierce and Frank Capra's Arsenic and Old Lace, mixed with the surrealist naturalism of my fourth film, What Have I Done to Deserve This?" the director explained.
