Promises, Promises star Sean Hayes has been tapped to host the 64th Annual Tony Awards. The announcement comes just weeks after an article in Newsweek criticized the openly gay actor's ability to convincingly play straight.
"I am absolutely thrilled to be hosting the Tony Awards," said Hayes, who came out of the closet earlier this year in The Advocate. "As the new guy on Broadway, it's an honor to be included in the established alumni."
Hayes, who racked up numerous rewards
for his work on the sitcom Will & Grace, was nominated for a Tony
for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for Promises, Promises. It
was his costar in that show, Kristin Chenoweth, who set off a firestorm
of response to the Newsweek article with her comments supporting openly
gay actors.
The Tonys will air Sunday, June 13 live on CBS. Click here to read Hayes's Advocate interview.
