Peter Piot, executive director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, will guide the agency for another four years, The Washington Times reports. Agency officials praised the Belgian physician and microbiologist's work in helping to promote HIV prevention and treatment worldwide, particularly in developing countries. "This is a crucial time in our fight against the epidemic and in our work to mobilize the world against this unique threat to human development and security," said U.N. secretary-general Kofi Annan in announcing Piot's four-year extension.
