On Monday in
Chicago, Abbott Laboratories and the Magic Johnson
Foundation launched a 10-city, multiyear tour to address HIV
and other health disparities affecting minority
communities. The educational partnership will target
high-prevalence cities with the retired basketball
legend's story about living with HIV, and it will offer free
HIV antibody, blood pressure, and glucose screenings.
"Minority communities are faced with challenging
health obstacles as a result of social and cultural
factors, but we can change that," Johnson said in a
press statement. "I am thrilled to be teaming up with Abbott
to make a difference and build awareness among
vulnerable populations about health risks to which
they may be socially disadvantaged, to share my
personal story, and to have an open dialogue about important
health facts that must not be overlooked." (AP)
