The Producers keeps it gay at Tonys
The Producers took home 12 nods at the 55th annual Tony Awards Sunday night, besting the previous record holder, Hello, Dolly!, which took 10 prizes in 1964. Out actors Nathan Lane and Gary Beach won for best actor-musical and best featured actor-musical, respectively, while Mel Brooks's score, which features the show-stopper "Keep It Gay," won for best original score. The show also won for best production, book of a musical, featured actress-musical (Cady Huffman), director-musical and choreography (Susan Stroman), costume design (William Ivey Long), set design (Robin Wagner), lighting design (Peter Kaczorowski), and orchestrations (Doug Besterman). As for non-Producers-related awards, Robert Sean Leonard won best featured actor-play and Richard Easton took best actor-play for portraying the youthful and mature stages of gay British scholar A.E. Housman's life in Tom Stoppard's The Invention of Love. A complete listing of this year's winners can be found at www.tonys.org.
