On Wednesday, Austria celebrated its first same-sex marriage, sort of.
Austria's Constitutional Court allowed a married male-to-female transsexual to change her birth certificate to reflect her recent sex change. However, the trans woman, who is a parent of two, chose not to get a divorce from her spouse.
The court said on its Web site, "Changing a sex entry in a birth certificate cannot be hindered by marriage."
The court's decision overturns a 1996 law issued by the Interior Ministry, which stipulates that partners of the same sex cannot be married.
The court's decision could set a precedent and possibly inspire other courts to make the same move.
