Although more
than 110 undergraduate students at Fudan University in
Shanghai, China, crowded into a classroom to hear a lecture
on homosexuality and AIDS prevention, no gay students
turned out for fear of being outed. The organizer of
the lecture at the elite university personally invited
several gay students to attend, but concern over their
classmates finding out about their sexual orientation
prevented them from showing up, Agence France-Press
reports, citing a report in the local Shanghai Youth Daily.
Until 2001 homosexuality was officially
considered a mental disorder in China. (The Advocate)
