The city of Eureka Springs, Ark., has opened a registry where both gay and straight couples can have themselves listed as partners, the Associated Press reported Friday.

Arkansas voters in 2004 approved a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, one of several states to do so in the backlash following the Massachusetts decision to allow gay couples to marry. The amendment does not prohibit the registry from opening in Eureka Springs.

Opponents of the registry attempted to block its opening by seeking a public vote. However, the city clerk denied two separate petitions because the wording didn't meet legal requirements, AP reported.

The registry will not be able to confer any special privileges to couples but will offer a signed certificate noting their partnership for a $35 fee. (The Advocate)
