At a New York awards ceremony late last month, a series of commercials that pointed out the harm in homophobic language won an award for Best Public Service Advertising Campaign from the prestigious Ad Council.
The commercials, titled "Think Before You Speak," featured celebrities like pop star Hilary Duff and gay comedian Wanda Sykes chastising people for saying something is "so gay." The hope is to discourage young people from saying "that's so gay" when describing something negative.
The Arnold Agency, creator of the commercials, took home the Gold Bell award for excellence. The advertising agency accepted the award with with the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network, which worked in partnership with Arnold to create the ads.
