Cyndi Lauper teams with Harvey Fierstein and director-choreographer Jerry Mitchell for a musical stage adaptation of the 2005 hit comedy Kinky Boots, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Kinky Boots will pair music and lyrics by Lauper with a book by Fierstein, who previously wrote Torch Song Trilogy and the book for the musical adaptation of La Cage aux Folles. Mitchell, celebrated for his work with the annual Broadway Bares benefit for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and for his work on both Hairspray and the 2005 revival of La Cage, will direct and choreograph the new show.
The musical will open at Chicago's Bank of America Theatre in October and could transfer to Broadway some time next season. No casting has been announced.
The 2005 British comedy starred Chiwetel Ejiofor as a drag diva named Lola who helps a man save his late father's shoe factory from bankruptcy.
