Fifteen thousand people filled the streets of Johannesburg on Sunday for the African continent's largest pride celebration.
"This was a record turnout since the not-for-profit Joburg Gay Pride Festival company was formed three years ago to organize the event, the largest and the original gay pride event in Africa," said organization co-chair Tanya Harford in a press release following the event.
An estimated 5,000 more attendees participated in this year's festivities compared to 2008.While this year marked only the third time that Joburg Gay Pride Festival has put on the event, Johannesburg hosted the first pride in Africa 20 years ago.
